DIY Boho Backyard Fire Pit

I have been wanting a fire pit for a while, so I finally took the plunge and ordered the necessary materials! The following supply list is for a 15′ round area.

36″ round fire pit insert
Rustoleum High Heat Ceramic Coating Spray
Black plastic garden border (we needed 2 of these)
102 edging pavers (60 for firepit and 40 for perimeter of area)
30 bags 0.5 cubic ft gravel (I chose multi-colored since white was unavailable, but multi-colored was a mix of gray and white)
1 bag 0.5 cubic ft sand
3 tubes adhesive
2 Outdoor Couches {Similar}
1 Set of 2 Chairs and a Table

First, I had to mark the center of the circle and then I tied a rope to it that was 7.5′ and I went around in a circle marking with spray paint until the entire 15′ circle was outlined. There are other ways to do this, but this was relatively quick for me, using some string I already had and one of our sprinkler stakes to tie the string to as I went around spraying in a circle. My husband then did the hard work of taking the grass up (rather than take a slower method to kill it, we wanted to remove the sod and grade the area so that it was flat and even.)

After we got it all evened out, we installed the black plastic border. This is optional but we hope it will help keep the grass out. After that we installed the edging pavers around the circle.

I painted our fire pit insert with Rustoleum’s heat spray to give it extra protection.

We used the adhesive as we were stacking layers of edging pavers around the fire pit insert.

After that was completed, we poured the bag of sand in the pit and one bag of gravel then spread the remaining bags of gravel all around. We may actually go back and get a few bags of the gravel, but so far it’s OK.

I added some of the Citronella tiki torches for fun, I feel like they added to the bohemian vibe I was going for, and anything to keep the bugs away when we are trying to enjoy ourselves by the fire!

I decided on these furniture pieces from Amazon because they are all-weather plastic wicker and waterproof. Even though the cushions are waterproofed, I sprayed an extra layer of Scotch Guard on them for good measure. I hope they hold up even though they are white! I also spray painted a couple black metal tables I had and had not found use for yet.

What do you think? We can’t wait to light ‘er up for the first time! Eventually would love to add a wooden gazebo that I can wrap solar string lights around & possibly add my hanging egg chairs too, to round out the seating…something like this:
